Frequently Asked Questions

At SMP Hair Solutions, we know clients often have questions before booking Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) treatment.

To help you better understand the process, we’ve answered some of the most common questions below.

If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, please contact our Leicestershire team and we’ll be happy to help.

How long does the treatment take?

Most SMP treatments are completed over 3 sessions.

Session 1 — Hairline & Foundation

3–5 hours
We recreate your new hairline and begin working over the affected area to make the hair appear fuller.

Session 2 — Density Building

3–5 hours
This session focuses on filling in the scalp and creating realistic density.

Session 3 — Final Perfection

1–4 hours
The final session is used to refine the look, perfect the hairline, and add final detail.

How natural do SMP results look?

Scalp Micropigmentation is designed to blend seamlessly with your existing hair, creating an incredibly natural appearance.

Most clients find that people simply notice they look fresher, younger, or more confident, without being able to tell exactly what has changed.

SMP creates a subtle enhancement that restores your hairline, frames your face naturally, and helps rebuild confidence.

Does SMP work with fair hair?

Yes.

SMP replicates the appearance of the hair follicle beneath the skin, rather than matching the colour of grown hair itself. This means it works very effectively with fair, blonde, and light hair tones.

Is SMP the same as a normal tattoo?

No — although SMP is sometimes called a hair tattoo, it is very different from traditional tattooing.

The treatment uses:

  • Specially formulated SMP pigments
  • Different needles and equipment
  • A completely different application technique
  • A much shallower depth in the skin

SMP also requires specialist training and certification to perform correctly.

Will the treatment damage my existing hair?

No, not at all.

SMP does not damage your natural hair follicles or existing hair.

In some cases, clients even report that the stimulation of the scalp may help encourage healthier hair growth.

How much is a top-up?

Top-up sessions are usually from £350, depending on the extent of hair loss and the work required.

Most clients choose a refresh every 2–5 years, although this can vary depending on:

  • Skin type
  • Lifestyle
  • Sun exposure
  • Aftercare
  • Desired changes to the style

How much deposit is needed to book?

A £200 deposit is usually required to secure your booking.

Please note this deposit is non-refundable once your appointment is confirmed.

    Is the treatment safe?

Yes — SMP is a safe, hygienic, and non-surgical treatment.

    We use:

    • Natural, high-quality pigments
    • Sterile single-use needles
    • Gloves for every procedure
    • Fully sanitised equipment
    • Proper clinical cleaning procedures between every client

Your safety and hygiene are always our top priority.

    Is SMP painful?

Most clients describe SMP as very mild discomfort.

On a scale of 1–10, it is usually around 3–4, making it far more comfortable than a traditional tattoo.

Because the pigment is placed much shallower into the skin, the sensation is significantly less intense.

Will the pigment change colour over time?

    No.

The pigments we use are manufactured to the highest professional standards and are specifically designed for SMP.

They will not turn blue or green over time, which can happen with standard tattoo inks.

This is achieved through specialist pigments, tools, and application techniques.

    What is the aftercare?

After each session, you can usually return to work immediately.

    • Do not wash or shave your scalp for 4 days
Keep the area protected from rain and excessive moisture.
    • Day 5: Rinse with warm water only
No shampoo, soaps, or baths. Use only a gentle splash of water.
    • Shaving from Day 5
You may shave using a foil shaver only — avoid wet razors or blades.
    • Moisturise 3 times daily from Day 5
Use a non-alcohol moisturiser to keep the scalp soft and healthy.
    • No swimming for 28–30 days
    • Use SPF 30+ sunscreen
Protect your scalp from sun exposure during healing and long term.
    • Wear soft headwear only if needed
Silk or soft caps are best. Avoid woolly hats or anything that may rub the treated area.
